Jake McCarthy découvre la facture instrumentale chez Irish Concertina Company, à Dublin. Il fonde ensuite TUNG Drum Company en 2016 pour fabriquer des tongue drums en bois, puis développe le Tunga Drum, associant le bois à une coque d’acier. Ses essais de handpans commencent en 2018. Après deux années de développement, il lance McCarthy Instruments et l’Emerald Handpan en 2020. Le dessin de ses instruments réunit acier et bois dur, poursuivant ce dialogue entre matériaux. Les démonstrations de gammes et de différents aciers permettent aux musiciens d’explorer les sonorités. Le récit du fabricant met au centre le plaisir de transformer des matériaux simples en instrument de musique.
