Phrygian-dominant handpan reading - 1-b2-3-4-5-b6-b7
Origins
The story behind Hijaz
Hijaz names both a region and an important family within Arabic maqam practice. The equal-tempered handpan layout is a modern Westernized adaptation, commonly described through Phrygian dominant, and cannot reproduce every microtonal nuance or melodic rule of maqam performance. The name remains a useful musical reference when the distinction between a fixed pitch set and the wider tradition is kept clear.
Characteristics
How Hijaz feels to play
A tight half-step followed by a broad augmented-second gesture gives Hijaz its immediate tension. Melodies can turn with a vocal-like intensity, and rhythmic accents quickly become dramatic. The major third adds firmness inside the darker surrounding notes. Careful pacing lets the characteristic gesture breathe instead of reducing the scale to a single ornamental effect.
