PANArt - Hang®

Natural-minor hexatonic without 4th - an early Hang sound model

Origins

The story behind Integral

Integral is an early PANArt and Hang-era minor layout. It offered a carefully reduced natural-minor field before complete Kurd layouts became common across the handpan scene. Its historical importance lies in how a small selection of notes created a balanced, recognizable voice for the instrument, showing that an omitted degree could make improvisation more fluid without removing emotional depth.

Characteristics

How Integral feels to play

The missing fourth lowers harmonic friction and removes a common point of suspension. Melodies settle naturally around the tonic, minor third, and fifth, making the layout centered and forgiving. Integral feels gently introspective rather than heavy: repeating patterns flow easily, chords stay clear, and silence can open between phrases without weakening the tonal center.
