Dante Bucci

Influential early Hang musician whose lyrical, rhythmically inventive solo work helped define the instrument’s expressive potential before his death in 2014.

Dante Bucci was a Netherlands-born musician based in Philadelphia who became one of the most influential early performers on the Hang. A percussionist, singer-songwriter and composer, he developed a personal style in which rhythmic independence, melodic repetition and spacious resonance supported complete musical narratives rather than isolated demonstrations of the instrument. His solo recordings and live videos, including material from “Reminiscence” and “Kinesthesia,” circulated widely among the first generations of handpan players and continue to be studied for their clarity and emotional pacing. Bucci also collaborated across Philadelphia’s independent music community and sometimes performed with two instruments, expanding harmonic and registral possibilities. He died in 2014 at the age of thirty-three. His legacy rests not only on technical innovation but on showing how the Hang could carry intimate, song-like composition with a recognisable individual voice.
