Jean-Matthieu Handpan

Jean-Matthieu Bourgeot is a French handpan recording artist whose solo compositions, improvisations and concert recordings explore instruments from several makers.

Jean-Matthieu Bourgeot documents his handpan playing through independently published recordings and accompanying videos. His Handpan LP, released in 2016, brings together eleven solo pieces performed on instruments by PANArt, Innersound, Aciel and Meraki. He handled the playing, recording and mastering himself, presenting the individual instruments without an accompanying ensemble. The pieces include Evening Song, Onde fragile and 4 Dots Theme, with video versions linked from the release. His live work is represented by an EP recorded at Le RDV du Hang in Lyon in January 2019. Its six tracks combine named pieces with an F Equinox groove and a D Kurd improvisation, connecting his recorded repertoire with spontaneous playing. His catalogue also includes individual recordings such as The Vault, described as a semi-improvised piece on an SPB D Kurd 9+1. Across these releases, his musical output documents both composed material and exploration of different handpans.
