Julien Coste is a multi-instrumentalist, composer and wind instrument maker whose work draws on traditional music. His instruments include handpan, santoor, ney, jaw harp, overtone flute, hulusi and bansuri. His biography describes studies in Turkey and India from 2004, followed by a French Ministry of Foreign Affairs research and specialisation grant in 2008. This supported his study of pakhawaj with Pt Shri Kant Mishra in Varanasi, in connection with Banaras Hindu University. His training also includes tabla, South Indian morsing and konnakol, Rajasthani jaw harp and frame drums. His interest in flutes developed into instrument making: he learned to build overtone flutes with Max Brumberg and bansuri with Mortujai Khan. Alongside these instrumental and craft practices, his musical collaborations include Tatcha with Maël Chauvet. His work connects performance, composition and the making of instruments across several musical traditions.
