Laura Inserra

Sicilian-born composer, performer and sound researcher whose pioneering practice combines Hang, rare instruments, structured improvisation, technology and immersive listening.

Laura Inserra is a Sicilian-born composer, multi-instrumentalist, educator and sound researcher based in the United States. She began working with the Hang in 2003 and became one of the instrument’s early international performers, integrating it with voice, strings, percussion, electronics and rare acoustic instruments. Her practice moves between concert composition, structured improvisation, immersive technology and sound-centred contemplative work. Projects such as Chambers of AWE, MetaMusic Healing and MetaHang reflect a continuing interest in how resonance, space and attention shape musical experience. She has also founded and supported community initiatives, including Samavesha, while teaching methods that connect technique with embodied listening. Her profile should be presented as both artistic and research-driven: she does not simply use the handpan for ambience, but investigates its role within complex, multisensory and intercultural performance environments.
