Luca Bertelli

Luca Bertelli is a Rome-based handpan performer, teacher and instrument maker who began playing handpan in 2006.

Luca “Hang” Bertelli trained in sound engineering and MIDI at Saint Louis Music College in Rome and began playing handpan in 2006. His early projects, Hang Project and LUMI, led to performances in Italy and across Europe. In 2014 he appeared on Gazebo and was subsequently a guest on Rai Radio 2; the following year he worked as a musician on Rai 3’s Kilimangiaro. His concert travels have included India, Japan, South Korea, Mexico and Canada, alongside workshops such as one in South Korea. Performing and teaching run alongside his work as an instrument maker in Rome. His workshop builds handpans by hand using nitrided DC01 steel and Ember steel with Ayasa shells. The instruments can be tried by appointment at the Handpan School in Rome’s Pigneto/Largo Preneste area. His practice thus connects musical performance, transmission and the development of instruments, with the workshop forming a distinct part of his professional activity.
