Ricky Hillson

Multi-instrumentalist, composer, maker and teacher whose handpan work connects improvisation, nature, world traditions and practical musical learning.

Ricky Hillson is a British multi-instrumentalist, composer, educator and instrument maker whose work moves between handpan, guitar, rubab and other acoustic traditions. His musical path began with guitar and songwriting before expanding through travel and study, including engagement with Indian classical music and instruments from Central and South Asia. The handpan became part of a broader practice concerned with improvisation, composition and the relationship between music, nature and personal attention. Hillson teaches handpan, RAV, guitar and ukulele through lessons, workshops, festivals and retreats, encouraging players to develop structure without losing spontaneity. His background outside music, including work in education, conservation and herbal practice, also informs a grounded and exploratory public identity. Rather than presenting one fixed style, his work invites curiosity across rhythm, melody, instrument building and the wider cultural contexts in which music is made.
